The College of Engineering (Dean Choongsik Bae) held the first meeting of the Public Relations Committee on June 5 to enhance the university’s global standing by promoting its outstanding achievements in education and research to leading universities worldwide.

The College of Engineering (Dean Choongsik Bae) held the first meeting of the External Affairs Committee on June 4 to increase the efficiency of mutual exchange in education and research with universities and institutions, and to enhance its reputation at home and abroad by strengthening its capacity for cooperation.

Dean Choongsik Bae of the College of Engineering at KAIST attended the 9th Asian Engineering Deans’ Summit (AEDS), a three-day event that commenced on May 29. Held at National Taiwan University (NTU, Taipei city), the summit was organized to stimulate discussions on educational programs of engineering colleges. Dean Bae was the chair of Session 4, and gave a presentation titled “Innovative Technology and Entrepreneurship.”

On May 22, the College of Engineering held a meeting between department heads and faculty holding key administrative positions to discuss development directions of the College and KAIST, and to share and exchange views on the latest issues.

On May 21, the College of Engineering held the first meeting of its Steering Committee, formed to establish development directions, facilitate exchange with local and international universities, and promote achievements of the College. The position of chair was assumed by the dean, and the members were comprised of the vice-dean, director of planning (Naehyuck Chang, professor of electrical engineering), director of public relations (Jinah Park, professor of computing), and director of external cooperation (Sang Ouk Kim, professor of materials science). The steering committee plans to hold meetings every two months to provide advice on the College’s development policies, such as identifying areas requiring innovation and monitoring related activities.

Awards Ceremony Held for 15th ..

The awards and scholarship ceremony was held for the KAIST Cho Jong-Hoon Academic Award. Hyuk Park, a professor of UPC-Barcelona Tech, was named the winner of this year’s award. In addition to the main award, scholarship certificates were delivered to students on May 13. The three recipients were Sangwoo Jung of the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Eun-hee Kang of the MS-Ph.D. Integrated Program in Mechanical Engineering at Korea University, and Chan-ho Song of Kongju National University High School. The Cho Jong-Hoon Academic Award was established in May 2003 in memory of Cho Jong-Hoon, an honorary doctor who passed away in an accident while conducting research in the rocket laboratory. The award was created from a donation of 478 million won by Dong-Gil Cho, the father of the late Cho. Since 2005, it has been presented to young scientists with outstanding research achievements in aerospace engineering. Every year, scholarships are offered to one student each at KAIST, Korea University, and Kongju National University High School, which are the schools attended by Cho. The prize money is 25 million won for the academic award winner, 4 million won for undergraduate or graduate students, and 3 million won for high school students.

Dear alumni, students, and members of the KAIST College of Engineering, I am Choong-Sik Bae, the dean of the College of Engineering. It is a great honor to be addressing you through the College of Engineering Newsletter. The College of Engineering has played a pivotal role in the development of KAIST and local industries. Thanks to the passion and commitment of alumni and current members, KAIST is now recognized as a world-class university. While we have come a long way, there are still many challenges that we must work together to overcome. The College of Engineering publishes a Korean newsletter to share the latest news of its three schools and thirteen departments. I hope that the biannual newsletter will create opportunities for valuable exchange and interaction among members. Since 2014, we have published an English research webzine titled Breakthrough, promoting our outstanding research achievements and enhancing the College’s brand value. I hope that this newsletter will play a similar role, laying the foundation for you to become pioneers who leave their mark in history. I invite you to share the latest news on the new College of Engineering website, and do share the link to those seeking information. The College of Engineering will continue to actively promote its achievements, building a greater sense of pride in alumni and members. The key to a successful organization lies in effective communication among members, and joint efforts toward a common goal. Keeping this in mind, let us trust one another, strengthen ties, and cooperate for mutual development. Sri Lanka’s University of Sri ..

Sri Lanka’s University of Sri Jaywardenepura (USJP) visited the College of Engineering on May 3 to benchmark KAIST’s interdisciplinary system and develop a new undergraduate curriculum. The USIP delegation, comprised of four members including the vice-president, met Choong-Sik Bae, the dean of the College of Engineering, and key faculty to learn about KAIST’s development and achievements over the years. This was followed by a tour of laboratories and other facilities on campus. Established in the capital of Sri Lanka in 1959, USIP is a prestigious university with more than 14,000 undergraduate students.

UAE’s Scholarship Coordination..

The Scholarship Coordination Office under the UAE’s Ministry of Presidential Affairs visited the College of Engineering on May 2 to discuss admissions of scholarship recipients and additional support for students. Organized upon request by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Korea, the meeting was held between four UAE representatives and key faculty of the College. After a discussion of cooperative measures, the delegation was given a campus tour. The two scholarship recipients are Almaazmi, Mohamed (undergraduate, School of Computing, incoming class of 2017), and Almehairbi, Reem (undergraduate, Department of Nuclear and Quantum Engineering, incoming class of 16). The Scholarship Coordination Office may support more students in the future.

Indonesia’s Universitas Praset..

Indonesia’s Universitas Prasetiya Mulya visited the College of Engineering on April 30 to discuss partnership and consulting for its new polytechnic school for computer/software engineering studies (for robotics) as well as aerospace engineering. The delegation from Universitas Prasetiya Mulya was comprised of the rector, faculty of related departments, and directors of academic cooperation. The representatives of the College of Engineering were vice-dean Sung-Yool Choi, external cooperation director Sang Ouk Kim, and other relevant faculty.

Appreciation Plaque Presented ..

On April 24, the College of Engineering presented an appreciation plaque to Kwang-Hyun Cho, the former head of the Department of Bio and Brain Engineering. The appreciation plaque was delivered in recognition of Cho’s contributions to the development of the department while serving as head from 2015 to early 2019.
