Stepping Into the World of Res..
Open KAIST 2019, an event that allows students and members of the public to tour KAIST research facilities and try out products of cutting-edge research, was held at the Daejeon campus on October 31st and November 1st. Sixteen departments including the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Department of Aerospace Engineering, School of Electrical Engineering, School of Computing, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Department of Nuclear & Quantum Engineering, as well as three research institutes—the Satellite Technology Research Lab, KI for Health Science and Technology and KAIST Institute for IT Convergence—participated in this year’s Open KAIST The participating departments and research institutes conducted a total of 56 programs in the six areas of lab tours, experience and demonstrations, exhibition of research outcomes, department introduction, special lectures and student societies. At the Department of Mechanical Engineering, the lab run by professors Kim Jung, Park Hyungsoon, Park Sukyung and Koo Seungbum presented its research, titled Human Motion Measurement Using Motion Capture Camera System. The system takes 3D measurements of the locations of joints in the human body, which are used in rehabilitation engineering and rehabilitation robots. Visitors were able to try out the system by having markers attached to their bodies, which allowed their movements to be captured and measured by twenty motion capture cameras. To dispel unfounded fears about nuclear energy and radiation, The Department of Nuclear & Quantum Engineering presented a lecture titled Misunderstandings and Facts about Nuclear Energy and Radiation, using scientific evidence to explain the role and necessity of nuclear energy. Organized biennially by the College of Engineering, Open KAIST is a key KAIST event to promote science culture to the public. It began in 2001. This year’s Open KAIST was the 10th. “We prepared this event to open the doors of our labs, where actual research is conducted, to create an opportunity for others to see and experience research”, says Dean Bae Choongsik of the College of Engineering. “KAIST will continue to make efforts to approach the public as a university that improves human lives through creative and daring research”.
